Hippo – Hippopotamus Amphibious

Hippos walk at the bottom of the rivers of dams and do not swim as per se. The create a negative buoyancy by breathing out before submerging and this allows them to walk under water. Hippos have enormous ,powerful muzzles that can stretch wide open. Their lower canines are modified into huge tusks that grow continuously and may reach 30-50 cm long. A hippo will defend itself and its young with these well adapted weapons and is able to bite a 3m crocodile in half.
